Five years ago, I proudly graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Tourism in Cebu, Philippines. Afterward, I pursued my passion for guiding and successfully earned my tour guide license. Achieving this milestone was a dream come true, but those close to me—family and friends—knew that my ultimate goal was to pursue a master’s degree abroad. Despite having opportunities to enroll in master’s programs in the Philippines, I held onto this dream and waited for the right moment.
Then, 2024 happened—a year full of surprises and blessings. For the first time, I traveled to Europe, representing my company at the world’s largest travel fair in Berlin. (You can read more about that incredible experience here: Kapwa Travel Fair). Thanks to my supportive bosses, I had the chance to immerse myself in a global platform. I also received an invitation from friends to visit Switzerland, making my European adventure even more unforgettable.
The Turning Point
This year, I traveled extensively, both for work and with friends. These experiences reignited my determination to pursue my long-standing dream. I realized that time is precious, and there’s no better moment than now to chase your goals.
In September, I began researching schools and programs that aligned with my aspirations. While considering institutions in Singapore, Switzerland, and Spain, UCAM (Catholic University of Murcia) in Southern Spain caught my attention. It offered an excellent reputation and affordable tuition fees, making it the perfect choice. To my immense gratitude, I also secured a sponsor to support my studies—another blessing that encouraged me to take the leap.
Why Spain?
Many people asked why I chose Spain, and my reasons were clear:
- Warm Climate: Spain’s sunny weather reminded me of home, making the transition easier for someone from the Philippines.
- Opportunities in Tourism: Spain is the second-most visited country in the world, making it a hotspot for tourism and hospitality. My Master’s in Hospitality Management perfectly aligns with these opportunities, opening doors to internships and potential job prospects.
The Journey to UCAM
The application process was intense, with less than two months to gather, submit, and wait for document approvals. It was nerve-wracking but entirely worth it. By November 2024, I found myself in Murcia, Spain, ready to begin this exciting chapter of my life.
Life in Murcia
Murcia is a fantastic place to study. The people are laid-back, the weather is warm and pleasant, and the cost of living is relatively affordable—though the currency difference between PHP and Euros can still be a challenge. The most significant hurdle for me has been the language barrier. Coming from a role at Kapwa Travel, where English and Filipino are predominantly used, learning Spanish is a new challenge.
However, I believe that challenges are opportunities in disguise. I’m taking it one step at a time, confident that I will adapt and grow along the way.
Looking Ahead
This journey has already been transformative, and I’m excited to see where it leads. Pursuing my Master’s at UCAM is not just about earning a degree; it’s about embracing new cultures, overcoming challenges, and moving closer to my dreams.
If you’re considering studying abroad, don’t wait for the “perfect time”—take the leap. You never know what incredible experiences and opportunities await you!
